Joss Whedon had an exclusive interview with Empire that will be in stores on May 30th. They released a snippet from the magazine that will also feature a dedicated piece to The Wolverine on the front (I’m sold. Consider that issue bought, Empire). It’s been a busy week for Avengers 2 news as Whedon was also recently on Jimmy Fallon talking about the announcement of two new characters that will be introduced in Avengers 2, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
So this begs the question, which Empire was smart enough to ask, “How are you going to avoid the usual sequel pitfalls? Often they become all about the villain at the expense of the stars.” Whedon (without acknowledging who the villain was) responded “Yes, that always makes me cranky. I’m very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows, the one thing I’ve never been very good at is guest stars, because I’ve always been interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I’m still most fascinated by them.”
Smart question considering that it seemed already an impossible task to give appropriate screen time to so many amazing hero’s in Avengers. Somehow however Whedon the great pulled it off perfectly. The only exception being Hawkeye spending most of the flick as Loki’s zombie bitch. But c’mon….. that is like complaining because the free mansion you were given didn’t come with golden toilet seats. Now you are adding two new hero characters and are (based on speculation due to the after credits scene from Avengers) possibly going to try and tackle Thanos or atleast have his character looming. After all you don’t hint at something that freaking huge and then NOT follow it up with something. Let’s just say the only man I trust to pull off a job this impossible is Ethan Hunt…..I mean Joss Whedon.
Side-note: What if the villain is actual Mandarin that we didn’t really get in Iron Man 3???? I know its far fetched but don’t act like your mind didn’t just explode.
